Starting Out

annettemartin8

So, here we are! Starting out in pilates, welcome and thanks for stopping by.

Many of you will know that I've always loved being active and staying fit and so when the balance of working vs looking after our family took a hit it seemed obvious to move into fitness so I could work closer to home.

I’ve always been active with a keen interest in how the body moves. I wanted to be a doctor but back then, with little career advice, I just did my favourite A-Level at university, which was history, instead of retaking my sciences. But that did lead me to a fun career in journalism as Sports Correspondent for ITV in the Midlands and subsequently into a buying role for the John Lewis Partnership.

It’s not been possible to juggle working in a commercial role. Commuting to London and across the country whilst having very small children and a husband in the military just wasn’t manageable so I’ve turned to the area of my life that’s always been important to me, being active.

From working as a swimming teacher in my late teens/early twenties, early gym classes before work to stomping the lanes of Benson and Ewelme with a double buggy, being active has been key to my physical and mental health.

I’ve rehabilitated back from two knee operations and major gynaecology surgery to a place where i'm able to do everything I want to do pain free. I understand the huge impact that lifestyle can have on how we feel and that with the right exercise or mobilisation programme, you can live life to the fullest and I can help you do that. Finding ways to be active after having children has also given me back my freedom of movement and it’s got me into the clothes I want to wear and feel good in. I have become a pilates teacher to share the benefits of this transformative way of moving and exercising. So here I am in South Oxfordshire living at a military base with a husband, waggy dog, a 7 year old and 3 year old twins.

Group exercise is incredible, the buzz of getting better together and the friendships you make is good for the soul. I am still meeting up with friends I met in a local gym 15 years ago and have very fond memories of the various classes I've been part of. I'm looking forward to bringing my experiences to my small classes to benefit those who want to move better. If group exercise doesn't work for you then 1:1 classes, in person or online, is possible too. In fact, for some, it's the best idea to get results at a pace, location and time that works for you. So, send me a message to find out more or i'll see you on the mat.

Much love, A
